iPhone Comes Up Short Against Google Gears!

Apple iPhone was rated the second most innovative product behind Google Gears [via Computerworld]. Google Gears is a service that allows online application designer to come up with versions that work offline as well. I can see how when looking at a bigger picture, Google Gears is more innovative than iPhone, but nevertheless we can’t discount the fact that iPhone has a bunch of game changing features inside that could change the way we use our phones forever. iPhone ver 1.0 is just the tip of the iceberg and if Apple plays its cards right, iPhone can dominate the mobile industry for a long time to come.

iPhone, AT&T, and Verizon’s Open Platform

Everyone in the mobile industry is excited about Verizon’s new initiative to provide an open platform were all compatible phones can connect and be used through Verizon’s network. This is a big step towards mobile platform independence and Verizon needs to be congratulated for their effort. However, where does iPhone stand with this? For one, it seems iPhone is contracted to at&t for 5 very long years. Of course, it seems there is a loophole where Apple could come up with a different version of iPhone, let’s say Open iPhone, that could be used with Open networks. One main problem is that Verizon’s network is CDMA-based and not GSM, but if there is such a loophole, then Apple should take advantage of it. iPhone belongs to all and should be enabled to be used with all compatible mobile networks. Let’s hope!

What To Expect From Apple In 2008?

The year 2007 was an amazing year for Apple. iPhone, iPod Touch, new iMacs, and the cool Mac OS Leopard made 2007 a truly memorable year for Apple consumers. But what can we expect from Apple in 2008? Here are some ideas for iPhone and iPod Touch:

1. iPhone Gen 2: The new generation of iPhone will probably arrive sometime in the summer. This new phone will support 3G networks and will come with some cool features such as Wi-Fi sync and possibly GPS functionality. Should be good!

2. iPhone SDK: A whole new year, a whole new way for Apple iPhone owners to tweak their iPhones and play with it. iPhone SDK is due late Feb/early March, but the possibilities are mouthwatering.

3. More storage for iPhone/iPod Touch: This is really iffy but in my mind Apple should soon have the possibility to offer more storage on iPhone and iPod touches, maybe iPhone 32 GB? Of course, the price needs to stay reasonable.Looking at 2007, one would say it would be hard for Apple to top this year, but Apple seems to have the ability to pull off great years one after another. So, expect wonders in 2008!

Is Wii Hotter Than iPhone?

When you think about it comparing Wii and iPhone is like comparing Apples and Oranges. Wii is a cool gaming system that helps you have a good time whereas iPhone is a digital powerhouse that lets you get on with your life on an everyday basis. In a perfect world, kids would get iPhones from their moms and dads for the holiday season, but it seems at least for this year Wii got the upper hand on the iPhone. Wii was the main driver behind Amazon’s successful year though MacBook topped the computer category. But while I expect Wii to slow down a bit in the new year, iPhone will only get hotter with the release of SDK and late adopters moving in.
