iPhone 1.1.4 Firmware due late February?

It seems more likely that not at this point. Rumors are circling around the web that Apple is planning to release the latest firmware just before the release of their new iPhone Development platform. Considering the fact that firmware 1.1.3 for iPhone was not a big deal, I guess it is better if we could figure out when Apple is releasing iPhone 2.0, which according to many authority iPhone sources would be sometime this year (No, it’s not in March).

Poll: How much would you pay for an unlocked iPhone?

Motley fool had a great article today about a solution for Apple that would allow it to keep the new buyers coming in while avoided the whole issue of long-term contract that at&t is forcing upon users. Basically the idea was that Apple could have a tiered pricing structure where they charge a bit more for their unlocked iPhones. That way people don’t have to get sneaky and try to hack their iPhones. They can get it from Apple, and that’s better for everybody. So here is the million dollar question for you. How much would you pay to get an unlocked iPhone as opposed to a locked iPhone? $499? $599? What would be a fair price in your opinion, considering the fact that you are not paying for the 2 - year at&t contract.

Why Apple Doesn’t Want You To Unlock iPhone!

Apple has set lofty goals for its iPhone product line. iPhone has already reached close to 4 million in iPhone sales, but it seems at&t has only managed to capture 50% of those people. The main question is, why do people unlock their iPhone? The answer is simple. People want to have the freedom to pick and choose their plans, and by unlocking iPhone, they have the ability to swithc to another carrier or even choose a cheaper plan. There is no question that at&t keeps some customers away. Why is it that Apple wants to stick with a carrier even though it may not be the best carrier for iPhone holders: cash! Apple gets a percentage of every single sold at&t plan, and Apple is better off selling you the at&t’s “great” service plans. I kind of feel for Apple. They are between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, they want to sell more iPhone to reach their lofty goals. On the other hand, Apple loses money everytime its users unlock iPhones. At the end of the day, I believe Apple is better off with allowing its users to unlock iPhones. Think about the money lost as an investment for the future. Partnership with at&t may not last forever, but Apple nation lives on!
