GPS Affecting Our Minds

GPS devices are now as necessary as bread and meat these days. The young generation will probably not remember life without GPS. Most good mobile phones come wih GPS too which means you don’t have an excuse for not owning one of these babies. But does a GPS make you dumber?

That’s what scientists are suggeting. In fact old schoolers don’t even want to give GPS a try, knowing that once you have tried it you are going to get used to its convenience. I used to believe that you need to outsource things that you are not good at. I personally was never had a good sense of direction, so a GPS did save me a lot with me getting to places around Philly. Having said that, now I see that by using GPS to get around, you are making your mind lazy on anything that involves direction. I personally loved finding directions with or without a map as it allowed my mind to solve the problem at hand: find the best route to a destination. Now you just click the “find the best route” button!

But I think the more damagin affect of a device such as GPS is that we are pretty mcuh becoming lazy as gadgets can now do everything from now and we are getting worse at things, gradually. Some people can’t live without a speller and as such get worse in spelling without it. The same issue with GPS. So who knows what else we will be getting worse at in the coming years.

GPS and other gadgets are nice convenient tools but over-reliance would be a big mistake. Do you find yourself over-relying on your daily gadgets? Can iPhone make you lazy too? Please share your thoughts here.
