Apple SDK Downloaded 100K Times!

Since the launch, which is basically 6 days ago, 100K SDK downloads have been completed. That’s an staggering number and shows how enthusiastic people are about the new iPhone SDK and the possibility of writing native applications for the Apple iPhone. I don’t know how many of these downloads are unique and how many people can actually find their way through Apple iPhone SDK, but it’s simply shows that there is a huge potential for the iPhone platform. Apple would definitely be better off if they keep more options open for the developer though.

Apple Keeping out the Competition In iPhone SDK?

It seems like it. Slashdot is reporting that we should not expect to see anything like a FireFox or Skype on the iPhone any time soon. Most of it is due to legal issues, and Apple obviously has a higher regard for Safari than Firefox. This could be a little bit problematic for Apple. As you all remember, Microsoft tried the same stuff with Netscape and while it paid off for them at the time, a lot of bad will was created towards Microsoft’s antics. I know that Apple is probably not pulling a Microsoft as they don’t seem to be that type of a company. Having said that, if Apple goes ahead and blocks anything that competes with its own Apps, you can surely expect the guys to bring a suit against Apple. If iPhone wants to achieve a truly open platform, blocking out Apps is not the way to go.

iPhone’s First SDK Based App?

I really think so until someone comes out and say otherwise. But it seems the very first App that is based on iPhone SDK was written by Erica. OK. It doesn’t do anything earth shattering (e.g. doesn’t make your iPhone a teleport device), but still is worth mentioning as it’s the first.

Get Your Hands Dirty with iPhone SDK

With the release of iPhone SDK, everyone wants to figure out how to get their hands dirty with the new software development kit. iPhone Developer’s cookbook is a book that you may want to look at for iPhone recipes. In fact there is a great interview with the author of iPhone cookbook that you may want to check out.

The iPhone SDK allows you to go native with your programs for the Apple iPhone, and you are not limited only to Web apps only. However, the only downside that I see to the SDK so far is the native C programming, which could be hassle for a pure web developer. But I do agree with Erica that iPhone SDK will push the iPhone to the next level. It’s all about sales for Apple, and whether it’s the jailbreak Apps or the iPhone Apps that are making iPhone platform more popular, Apple shouldn’t care in my opinion. How Apple handles the jailbreakers is going to determine how crazy popular iPhone is going to get in the next few months.

Buckle Up Everyone

I did mention a month ago that people are not simply waiting for the iPhone SDK to be released. They are planning, some are even coding prototypes for the iPhone so to be ready when the SDK is released. PC Magazine is reporting that a host of software makers are planning to attack the iPhone market with their native programs. But that’s nothing in compare to what happens when the SDK is officially released!
