The Key To Developing a Successful Paid iPhone App

picture-1

The iPhone platform has given developers and marketers yet another platform to push out innovative products and express their creativity. A lot of companies have developed free iPhone solutions and used them as a platform to drive sales to their paid applications. In fact, it is not that unusual to have both paid and free versions of the same iPhone application.

Developing an iPhone application is more than just picking up a book, It’s nice to know how to develop native-C applications, but at the end of the day, selling on the iTunes store depends on how smart your business strategy is. In order to have a successful paid iPhone app, you want to:

  • Provide unique value: very simple concept but a lot of folks get it wrong. When you develop an iPhone app, you want to make sure that it is something that folks will pay for. There are a lot of free applications available on iTunes, so you want to make sure you top them which brings me to the next point.
  • Market your app: have you wondered why some application developers manage to extract $$$ from their customers even though their applications are not that much different from free iPhone applications on iTunes?
  • Address a need: this point is tied closely to the last two. The need to have fun, to kill time, to manage tasks, or to find things fast can help you sell more apps. Some needs people die to get. Some others, people rather address for free or pass completely. Read the rest of this entry »

Happy New Year

2008 was a rocky year by all accounts. The year started as a promising one and ended with the economy in turmoil. We saw the rise of iPhone 3G, and the rumors of Steve Job’s death. Looking back at it, I haven’t had this much fun in years, and we are just getting started. 2009 promises to be another tough year for a lot of us. But hopefully we are going to have some questions answered as far as Apple is concerned:

  • Will we see Steve Jobs stand down as Apple’s top executive?
  • Will we see iPhone 3.0?
  • Will Apple move into the ebook market?
  • Will Apple go Nano with the iPhone?
  • Will we see a new link of Macbooks?
  • Apple + Blu-ray?

There are of course many other questions to be answered in the new year, and it’s exciting to think about the possibilities. What do you think?

If you were to add one feature to iPhone 3G, …

Here is the question that I love to ask about new products. Considering that iPhone 3G is a near perfect gadget, if you were Steve Jobs and had the choice to only add one feature to the iPhone 3G to make it stand out among the competition next year, what would it be and why? Very interested to hear your thoughts.
