You can’t ever get enough of all the cool applications that you can find in iTunes. Almost any type of application that you can think of has been made for this platform. So it’s no wonder many are using their phones to become more organized and keep track of their daily tasks. As it turns out, there are plenty of female-specific apps available in iTunes as well. Whether it’s tracking periods or choosing baby names, iTunes has something for everyone.

Apple has managed to pack many features in the device, but it hasn’t been able to do so far is offer long life with the device. It’s true that the iPhone has improved in the energy management department. However, you can’t expect to disappear with your iPhone for a month without running out of battery at some point. One can always carry iPhone adapters to have a way to charge the device on the go, but what if an outlet can’t be found. A good way to get around this issue is by carrying a solar charger for iPhone. Apple is not exactly the most open company in the world. There are a lot of things that Apple doesn’t let out. One of those long-held secrets used to be Apple’s agreement for its iPhone app developers. If you have developed an app for iPhone platform, you have seen and agreed to that agreement. Developers don’t want to risk Apple’s wrath, which is why we haven’t had so many leaks in this area. But NASA’s application for iPhone has brought some unexpected surprised upon Apple. Apple probably didn’t expect anyone to invoke the Freedom of Information Act to dig out the license agreement between Apple and NASA. The EFF has not only done that, but it has also published iPhone development license agreement for everyone to see (read it here).

It’s not hard to imagine what Apple has included in its license agreement. If you think about it, there is a reason why developers don’t talk or complain much about how Apple treats them. There is a ban on any public discussion of the agreement. Apple also forbids its developers from taking their app to underground marketplaces such as Cydia. That has happened a few times, so it’s not clear how Apple has enforced this ban. And what happens if a developer messes up and gets sued? Apple will pitch in $50 and the rest will be on the developers’ shoulders.

These license agreements are in most cases iron clad. Whether you are dealing with Apple or other top companies, you are not going to find too many holes in these documents. As one would expect, Apple does reserve the right to remove your app from its store without you having too much to say about it. You are also forbidden from trying to hack Apple products or reverse engineer Apple’s software.

I am not sure why this document has generated so much buzz on the Internet. If you have worked with any large corporation, you have seen similar license agreements. It’s not surprising to see Apple protects itself against all lawsuits by giving itself complete control of how to deal with your app in case of a violation. Besides, the company should have known that this document will eventually come out. So don’t expect Apple to change its ways now.

We are only days away from the official pre-order date for Apple iPad. It has taken Apple a while to put up the device for sale. But it’s finally happening. The success of the iPad can determine the direction that the Apple will take in the near future, but the company has so many things going on that iPad won’t be the only story of this year for Apple. For starters, 2010 seems to be the year that Apple finally starts responding to some of those lawsuits that have been going against it. Apple may have gone after HTC over its partnership with Google, but the result of that lawsuit can have many ramifications for Apple and its competitors. There is no argument that Apple competitors will think twice before implementing multi-touch capability on their devices. So one could argue that Apple’s lawsuits have the potential to disrupt its competitors’ plans dramatically.

Apple has huge plans for its iPad. It has adopted a very aggressive pricing strategy to make sure the device sells big. The company plans to build 5 million iPad units for the first half of 2010. There were many talks a few weeks ago about Apple postponing the release of iPad. Those stories turned out to be false as the company gears up for a huge year with iPad and iPhone 4.

…various news articles and competitor notes calling for a build delay were just false alarms and note Apple has already announced that Wi-Fi iPad models will be available in the U.S. on April 3 and models with Wi-Fi and 3G will be available in late April…

Those of you who have become addicted to your iPhone are going to have much to cheer about with all the features that Apple is planning for next generation iPhones. In the future, you may be able to open doors with your iPhone among other things. Pretty handy when you think about it.

Developers have not had as much to cheer about in the past couple of weeks. They have seen some categories of apps removed from iTunes. If that’s not enough, some are struggling to test their applications for iPad. Since Apple does not provide review iPad units to all developers, it’s hard to see any way out for those developers other than what they have been using so far – iPad emulators. The good news is that Apple is putting the finishing touches to its next SDK release, giving iPad and iPhone developers more tools to work with. Considering the apps that are in the works for iPhone (such as EA Sports Active 2.0), the future seems bright for Apple’s handheld devices.

When Apple announced its new creation the iPad, consumers were promised access to thousands of apps on the new device. After all, it’s not smart to develop a whole new product and not take advantage of the work that’s already been done by iPhone developers. What Apple did not promise was all iPhone apps making it to the iPad. That’s now seems to be the case as not every app is going to fit on the iPad properly. You certainly don’t want those ported iPhone apps to look lousy on the iPad. But as Wired put it, some of those apps are going to be sorely missed:

But if you recall, the iPhone ships with some apps that appear to be left out from the iPad: Stocks, Calculator, Clock, Weather and Voice Memos. What gives?

Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment, but I’m willing to guess Apple will just stick those apps in the App Store for a free download, and they’ll be the same apps as they were on the iPhone. After all, it’s unlikely there’s much to do with those particular apps to make them visually special for the iPad.

Steve Jobs seems to have struck down a few of these apps as they didn’t fit the “iPad experience” he has envisioned. I do believe that Apple will eventually introduce these apps for iPad as the new device matures. The iPad development challenges for developers have not gone away however. It’s one thing to test your app on an emulator and hope for the best. It’s another thing to have the device in your hands and have the ability to test the app you have developed. Macworld described the challenge the best:

And yet developers are being asked to design applications to show off just how cool the device can be and enhance its appeal for millions of potential customers. It’s a little bit like being asked to decorate and furnish a room with your only reference being a photograph.

Apple may have already provided its top developers with test units to help them develop their apps more conveniently. That’s something that should have happened for more than just a handful of developers. The company could have put aside a certain number of iPad units up for rent to help with the issue. Maybe next time.

The challenges of developing apps for iPad won’t take too much away from the momentum the device already has, even prior to its official release date. But expecting iPad to be a near perfect device is wishful thinking.

The iPad is finally coming to an Apple store near you. As Apple announced last week, the device will go up for sale on March 12th and will start shipping on April 3rd. You know we are getting close to an Apple release date when Apple’s marketing machine starts coming up with fun commercials. The iPad may not have too many commercials at this point, but its very first was aired last night during the Oscars. It has already generated quite a buzz around the Web. We all know that Apple gadgets look much more tempting in Apple ads. This latest ad was no different.

Some people are going to love the iPad based on the above app, and some are just going to save their money and wait for Microsoft’s tablet, which could go on sale on June. Apple bringing out its latest ad during the Oscars shows why the company is so successful in marketing its product. Putting the right product in front of the right audience usually pays off big.

The iPad is not perfect. For starters, we still have to wait to see how the device performs with AT&T’s wireless plan. The device won’t be able to tether to your iPhone. Besides, the iPad looks a bit less user friendly than Microsoft’s Courier tablet (if the concepts we have seen materialize). But there is nothing a few cool iPad apps and a price drop can’t change.

Fahrplan: a cool iPhone application for Germany that provides you with up to date timetable information for German public transport. Just type in the name of station or city and get the arrival and departure times for your ride.

Apple has just announced that the WiFi iPad will be making its way to the market on April 3rd. The device is up for grabs for $499. You can order your iPad starting March 12, 2010. Considering the demand for the device that may be a good idea. Many experts expected iPad to get a price cut before making its debut, but it seems Apple doesn’t have to bother with that at this point.

Your take: will you be getting WiFi iPad or will you wait a month more for the 3G version?

We all know that Apple feels somewhat nervous about the competition its facing from Google and its partners. Android may not be as good a platform as iPhone at this point, but it’s growing fast. The fact that it’s making its way to multiple handsets (made by HTC, Motorola, and other companies) has given Android platform a lot of momentum. We haven’t seen Android beating iPhone in any reports so far, and it’s safe to say that iPhone will continue to beat Android for the time being. However, according to Quantcast, iPhone’s growth may be slowing down a bit while Android continues to climb.

As the above chart indicates, the iPhone is still king in North America despite all the growth that Android has seen in the past year or so. What could be a bit alarming for Apple is the fact that the iPhone platform has lost market-share not only in the past quarter but in the past year overall.

Interestingly enough, RIM has managed to reverse its negative trend in the past few month with a strong month in February. Still, it’s not wise to read too much into these charts. We all know that the iPhone platform is still a work in progress. We are still waiting for Apple to announce its partnership with Verizon and/or T-Mobile. And the company has yet to complete its mission internationally. So there is still plenty of growth to be had for the iPhone platform.

There is no question that Android will continue to challenge iPhone for years to come. Many experts have predicted that the platform will catch iPhone by 2012, and that does not seem unreasonable at this point. But Apple does not own the PC market either. The catch here is that the iPhone will put up a stern challenge against Android. When platforms compete, we win!
