I read a story a few days back about a Russian gentleman who complained about how Apple charges them a few hundreds in premium. Having to pay $800 for an iPod touch or an iPhone has got hurt. Of course, the good old Apple has always been famous for charging an extra premium for its shiny products, and to tell you the truth I don’t mind it that much. What bothers me is the fact that Apple is not letting people who have unlocked their phones to have an easy ride. By sending updates that make a brick out of your shiny iPhone, Apple is sending the message to its iPhone holders, “do not unlock your iPhones.” Apple is a great company, but at some point people are going to get mad with this kind of treatment. I understand that Apple has a contract with at&t, but according to FCC, you cannot prevent your cell phone holders from unlocking their phones. So why not let iPhoners do it? Sure, Apple will lose some money, but there got to be another strategy such as charging a small fee for updates or charging more for phones without plans.
