InformationWeek had a nice article about the latest Strategy Analytics report on iPhone’s standing in the U.S. wireless market. But seemed surprising to some was the fact that RAZR V3 was the No. 1 overall phone in the U.S. Of course, we all know that Apple’s marketing machine will catch up to late adopters, and with the holidays upon us, iPhone will probably be one of the best sellers, if not the most selling item in the U.S.
As you all know, V3 is an inferior product to iPhone. V3 is not really a smart phone, and while it appeals to non-tech people, it does not satisfy us iPhone maniacs’ appetite for coolness. Besides, V3 had a head start over iPhone, and the fact that it was offered for like $50 after a 2 year contract makes it more appealing to frugal families who don’t want to spend a month’s salary on a heavenly product such as iPhone. Finally, I would put it that smart phones are not for every one. For instance, if you are not into watching YouTube videos with your cell phone, then iPhone is not for you. If you don’t know what Outlook is or you are not into taking pictures with your phone, iPhone is not for you. Also, if you like to only charge your phone once a month, iPhone again is not for you. But these are the good things about iPhone. If you are into bells and whistles, then you got to have iPhone and research shows that the number of people who care for bells and whistles is usually less than those who don’t. So, it is normal that a rather primitive phone such as V3 is ahead of iPhone on sales. But that’s not going to last long anyway.
