Apple Sued Over iPodHash

Another day, another lawsuit for Apple. Only this time it’s about Apple’s push to halt the iPodHash project. iPodHash project was an open source move to make iPod Touch and iPhone more compatible with 3rd party applications in addition to iTunes. Apple did use checksum hash to make sure it controls what applications iPhone and iPod Touch work with. The project was about breaking that hold, and that’s when Apple went to work to try to stop the project. Apple argued that iPodHash was threatening its DRM mechanism and should be taken down. That’s why EFF and Odioworks are suing Apple.

This is one of those lawsuits that actually has some merit. Apple is known for wanting to have as much control as possible over its products. The fact that iTunes is not available for some platforms justifies the work that was being down by iPodHash developers. In one hand, Apple has the right to protect its copy-protection system. The trouble is there is a difference between someone wanting to get iPhone to work with 3rd party applications and those who want to remove Apple’s Fair-Play copy protection system. Apple does want more control over its products but at some point you are going to turn people off by exerting too much of it. If anything, the open source community can help Apple take the iPhone to the next level.

Your take: is Apple being fair by targeting iPodHash and other similar projects?

  1. What Apple is trying to protect is not the sanctity of its DRM but the profits of the iTunes Store. If you can use another app to sync with your iPhone, you can buy tunes, movies and tv shows easily from another source.

Me? I love my iPhone but hate iTunes (the application) with a passion. I’d just like to use something else to manage my tunes.
