If you are a developer, and you have been dying to have the ability to develop and deploy an application for iPhone, then your lucky day has come. Steve Jobs announced yesterday that iPhone will finally be open to third party applications. Here is what Steve had to say about this:
“We think a few months of patience now will be rewarded by many years of great third-party applications running on safe and reliable iPhone.”
But you can’t do this just yet. According to Jobs, Apple will need till February to get its things together before opening up iPhone to third-party developers. This is certainly good news for iPhone fans and owners. iPhone is more than just a phone. It’s like an ultimate ultimate mobile PC. A savvy user can do so many things with iPhone that a lot of non-tech guys couldn’t do with their PCs in their homes. By opening up iPhone to third-party users, Apple now has a chance to grow iPhone to a huge platform with unlimited possibilities.
Obviously, with this move Apple is taking some risks as well. For example, there are a certain few of us who make a living out of making others miserable by writing apps that damage or slow down PCs and Macs. Now these guys may have some ideas to do the same to iPhone too. But the growth opportunity is much bigger than the risk here. Now, for the next move. Please dump at&t, Steve!
