iPhone and the Battle of China

China could soon become the biggest cash cows for Apple. Apple has been in discussions for a while to enter the market, and it seems the Chinese fan will be getting their hands on iPhone 3G sooner rather than later. By posting iPhone 3G details on its site, China Mobile has given the strongest indication that iPhone in China is finally becoming a reality. Apple and China Mobile talked for a while to no avail, and some were talking about Apple finding the Chinese market too difficult to enter. So I was surprised that an agreement was reached with China Unicom. China is quickly becoming the next big superpower in the world, and their companies are not exactly known for smooth negotiations.

Apple is opening a can of worm by entering the Chinese market. We all know what happened with Google. If Apple folks think for a second that it will not be a target for censorship or more control, they better think again. The market does expose Apple a lot of new customers. But at some point Apple will be forced to make some of those tough decisions to stay in the market. Now that will be dramatic.

  1. I don’t mean to offend, but it is China Unicom, rather than China Mobile, that was reported, according to the article mentioned in this post: http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10203397-37.html, to have some breakthrough on negotiation with Apple. I got totally amazed in the first place reading this post. :)

    Best Regards

  2. Hey Frank,

You are absolutely right. Didn’t mean to say that. It seems I twisted my words around and forgot to tell the whole story. Can I blame it on April fools’ day? It’s just around the corner :)

Sorry for the bad delivery. It shouldn’t have happened so thanks for the heads up.
