Steve Jobs Wanted An iCar?
0The iPod, iPhone, and iPad have reached millions of homes in the past few years. There is no sign that Apple is slowing down. In fact, the company plans to launch even more exciting products in the near future to continue making big profits (e.g. iHDTV, retina MacBook, …). The next iPhone is expected to make its debut in September or October. It will have a faster processor, better cameras, and a larger screen. According to Bloomberg, this was one of the last projects Steve Jobs worked on before his death.
A larger iPhone was not the only thing Steve Jobs was working on. As the Biographer Walter Isaacson revealed a while ago, Mr. Jobs thought he had cracked the code for a standalone Apple TV set. As J. Crew CEO and Apple board member Mickey Drexler revealed in an interview with Fast Company, Jobs was dreaming about the possibility of making an iCar:
Look at the car industry; it’s a tragedy in America. Who is designing the cars? Steve’s dream before he died was to design an iCar… it would’ve been probably 50% of the market. He [Jobs] never did design it.
Chances are we won’t see an Apple iCar anytime soon. But considering how Apple is penetrating new markets all the time, it is not such a crazy idea. Who knows what could happen in 5 to 10 years.
Your turn: if you were to design an iCar, how would you do so to set it apart in the auto industry?
