iPhone 3.0 Update, New Models On the Way

Product Details

iPhone 3.0 has generated quite a buzz in the tech world. We already know a lot about the OS, and the features that we are going to get with that release. There have been a few rumors about the new models that we will see released in the summer, but until now most folks have predicted two new models for the U.S. market. But a new rumor suggests that Apple is creating only one new model for the U.S. The other model that we have been talking about is going to be developed for developing country.

If you think about it, this new rumor makes more sense. The U.S. market is different from the global market. There is no iPhone fits all here. Apple has realized the challenges of entering developing markets, which they are probably working on a model that works in those markets. The U.S. phone will probably be significantly improved. There will be a better quality web cam on it, and you can expect more memory. In order to go viral in developing countries, Apple needs to work on an affordable iPhone model, which is apparently what they are doing.

At the end of the day, Apple has to change its approach to dominate more markets. Not all markets are the same and introducing a cheap iPhone model is probably the right way to go.

Apple Releases iPhone OS 3.0 Beta, Gets a Surprise

iPhone OS 3.0 preview blueprint image.

We have been hearing about iPhone 3.0 OS for a while now. A few days ago, we finally had a chance to see iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2. As you can guess, the software is not exactly the complete version, but it is taking shape and new features are being added as we go through the betas. You would think it’d a take a few days for crackers to jailbreak iPhone 3.0. Apple got an early surprise this time around.

Jailbreaking iPhone has become a sport in the past few months. Multiple teams around the world compete to break the iPhone OS as fast as possible. One would think that Apple is making the effort to put obstacles in front of crackers. But as hard as Apple may be working on this issue, these guys are getting better. This time it took only a couple of days for Apple’s latest release to be cracked. Of course, when you jailbreak your iPhone, you risk bricking it. Having said that, the fact that people are taking time to break the beta code shows the strength of the iPhone community. These guys are ready to go the extra mile to get more out of their phones and help others do so as well. Apple has so far managed to control the iPhone platform by introducing updates one after another. But one has to wonder for how long Apple can keep control over its cult.

ParkingLot for iPhone: Review

12

Puzzle games are extremely popular on the iPhone platform. Many of them have gone to top the best sellers chart on iTunes. And there is a simple for that. Puzzles are stimulating, and they do kill time. So if you are bored, you can get over it fast with a nice puzzle. ParkingLot is another puzzle for the iPhone platform that involves you getting your car out from a jammed parking spot. Sounds familiar? We have all been there before, and it’s a challenge even in the real world. But of course, this game goes beyond anything you see in the real world. You have 12 packs of more than 450 puzzles to solve, and you have the option to make things very difficult for yourself in this game.

13

The graphics are great, and the puzzles get truly interesting as you solve a few couple. I don’t know about you, but I always love a challenge when it comes to parking cars, and while I don’t have time to spend all day parking my car in real life, I can easily tackle all kinds of situations on ParkingLot. Overall, if you are looking for a challenging iPhone puzzle that is not only fun but simple to understand, you won’t go wrong with ParkingLot.

Skype on iPhone? Gotcha, Canada!

Product Details

Yesterday, I put up a piece on how Skype has come to the iPhone platform. Thankfully, nobody here thought that it was an April Fool’s joke. But the good Canadian folks have to do without the service due to the complexity of licensing software in Canada. A spokesman for Skype addressed the issue:

There is a vague restriction in one of the standards-based technology licences and Skype is looking into it

Canada has had these issues before. It even had to wait a while to get the iPhone. Skype and iPhone are not the problem here. It’s the regulation in Canada. Many analysts are claiming that the wireless carriers in Canada are not ready to allow Skype get on the iPhone, while others claim lack of consumer interest as the reason Skype is not coming to Canada. Both claims have their shortcomings. Skype has been available on Windows Mobile devices in Canada before. So I am not sure the first argument is that valid.

Lack of consumer interest is another dubious claim. Skype is a global phenomenon, and I am sure Canadians do make International calls as well. I do believe that Skype will catch on in Canada, and it helps that Rogers Communications Inc has made no effort to “prevent” iPhone users from getting Skype. Maybe it just takes a little bit of time. Am I being too optimistic?

Skype for iPhone Goes Straight To The Top

1

We all knew Skype was coming on iPhone, but who knew it could top the best sellers chart in such a short time. I guess it wasn’t that hard to predict that an application that allows you to save big money on international calls was always going to be a hit.

11

Skype allows you to call landlines and mobile phones around the world, and you can also keep track of who’s online too. The app is free as well. The software still needs some work. People have complained about dropped calls and crashes. And while I haven’t experienced that many crashes with this app, there is no question Skype needs to make some changes to make the app even more stable.

Overall, if you are looking to save money on your international calls, Skype for iPhone is a winner. It’s not perferct, but it works. And iPhonians seem to like it too!

Your Take: have you experienced any issues with Skype for iPhone?
