iPhone @ Walmart But Not Online

Folks got too excited about the whole Walmart-iPhone issue a while back. After all, there were rumors going around that Walmart could use its bargaining team to strike a cool deal for the consumers. Turns out, Walmart could only drop the price by $2, and no $99 iPhone will be coming to your Walmart anytime soon. But here is the bad news! You can’t even buy the iPhone online at Walmart.com.

It turns out the whole Walmart issue was a non-issue afterall.

The Appeal of Refurbished iPhone

Most folks have probably heard by now that the good old Walmart will be offering the iPhone from now on. Sure, you don’t get a huge discount, but for what’s worth, I am sure there will be a lot of people who rather get their iPhones at Walmart than an AT&T store, right? Not if AT&T has anything to do with it.

The nations “fastest 3G network” now will be offering refurbished iPhones starting from $99. True. These are refurbished, but most folks know that refurbished items are as good as new these days, especially if you get a significant discount with them. Having said that, I wish the rumors of a cheaper iPhone becoming available through Walmart were true. Too bad.

Whatever happened to iPhone @ Walmart

There were rumors a while back that Apple would start selling iPhones at Walmart stores soon. It seems that day is close if you believe the story being reported by PC World. The original story was about iPhone being sold for $99, but that seems to be false at this point. I have not heard anything about the new cheaper iPhone yet, which means even if Apple is still planning on it, it won’t be released to Walmart on December 28.

Walmart will give Apple access to a whole new segment of consumers. Folks who go to Walmart are more conservative and price conscious, which is why it would have made sense to release a $99 iPhone. I guess that option may come back to the table depending on how this relationship works out.

iPhone @ Walmart? Say it ain’t so!

There are rumors going around the web that Walmart will start selling $99 iPhones soon! Now that is going to be huge. Think about it. $99 is a very low price and is somewhat in the middle of the range most folks pay for their everyday purchases at Walmart. And Walmart will way more exposure to the iPhone than ever before. Bloomberg has the story. It goes like this:

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. will become the second mass-market retail chain to start selling Apple Inc.’s iPhone, with two store representatives saying the world’s largest retailer will carry two models of the Web-surfing handset this month.

I think this move is great for Apple and Steve is going to reap the rewards for months to come. But in my mind, Amazon is the next logical channel for Apple. How many folks do you know who make as many purchases on Amazon as they do on Walmart? I know a lot of folks who fit this category. But the Walmart move will truly push the iPhone to new heights.

Your take: will Walmart officially end the quest of iPhone killer companies?
