Meet Spike: a powerful tool that lets you measure, model, and 3D print things. It uses laser accurate augmented reality to capture, map, and model any object from up to 200 yards away. The process sounds complicated, right? It all happens on your smartphone. Spike attaches to your device to help you model objects faster. It uses a digital camera, 3D compass, laser range finder, and GPS to get the job done.
Spike can measure the distance to an object, get accurate measurements from any angle, determine the volume and area of objects, model objects in 3D, and more. You can share the data with others. Spike is SketchUp friendly. The company will allow third party app developers to access its API. An iOS app is in the works for Spike. Needless to say, this is one heck of a project that was fully funded on Kickstarter. You can order yours here.
