Each iPhone and iPad on the market has a special identification number called UDID. Those who have developed apps for iOS are already familiar with that. Some developers have been writing code to access UDID information for a while. Considering that Apple has had to deal with all kinds of privacy issues recently, it is not a surprise that it is now rejecting any app that accesses the UDID.
The UDID codes are big deal. They let developers keep track of their applications. Mobile advertisers also use the UDID codes for targeting purposes. Apple had already told developers to get ready for this change 6 months ago. But it is moving ahead with this move even faster. Not every app developer has implemented the proper changes so this development won’t make everyone happy. For Apple, this is all business. The company is under immense pressure from lawmakers. Killing off UDID access entirely addresses many privacy issues that have plagued Apple.
Speaking of Apple, it is expected to bring a new iPhone to the market later this year. We have heard a number of rumors about the iPhone 5 having a 4.6 inch retina display. According to iMore, the next generation iPhone might keep its 3.5″ display but introduce a micro-dock to replace the 30-pin dock connector. Just like the new iPad, the iPhone 5 is expected to have 4G LTE connectivity. These are still rumors at this point. We will have to wait a few months to find out what the new iPhone looks like.
