We have heard a ton about Apple’s interest in building a better Apple TV. The iHDTV has been long rumored, but we probably won’t see it this year. As the Wall Street Journal is reporting, the future version of Apple TV could include a streaming TV service. Apple’s box would get a variety of Comcast channels for a monthly fee:
Apple’s intention is to allow users to stream live and on-demand TV programming and digital-video recordings stored in the “cloud,” effectively taking the place of a traditional cable set-top box… People familiar with the matter said that while Apple would like a separate “flow” for its video traffic, it isn’t asking for its traffic to be prioritized over other Internet-based services.
Apple has sold a ton of Apple TV units recently, which explains why the company is all of a sudden focusing hard on improving the product dramatically. This deal certainly sounds interesting, but it all comes down to how much Apple and Comcast are going to compromise to strike it. If Apple fails to get a good deal here, it will probably focus on gaming and apps to make its set-top boxes more attractive.
The other rumor that has been around on the Internet is Apple making iTunes available to Android users. We are talking about the company giving Android fans the ability to buy content from Apple. Sources have told Billboard that the idea is being explored, but there is no guarantee that we will see it happen. Considering how much Apple hates Android, this move would be a tad bit surprising.
