Amazon, Google, and Apple seem to be at it again. Just a few days after Amazon announced its Fire TV device, we are now hearing more rumors about Apple and Google both getting more serious about the consumer entertainment business. Apple HDTV has been rumored for years, but so far we have not seen any evidence that suggests the company is close to releasing it. Korean Herald is now reporting that Apple is testing 65″ TV panels for its iHDTV.
Previous rumors had suggested that Apple was going to release the iHDTV in 2 sizes: 55″ and 65″. Apple is also working hard to improve the Apple TV set-top box. We are not going to see an iHDTV this year regardless.
Speaking of the TV business, Google is planning to take on Apple, Amazon, and Roku with Android TV. The Verge has found documents that suggest Google will launch Android TV as an entertainment interface to take on Apple TV, Fire TV, and other interfaces. Android TV will support voice input and notifications.
As the Verge has reported, Google is currently courting select app developers to create games and apps for Android TV. This is essentially Android on a TV screen. The only question is what will happen to Chromecast. It remains to been how this will turn out.
