MyTouch 3G To Challenge iPhone

Palm Pre is still one of the top challengers to iPhone, but it seems it’s losing steam just a bit. But when one challenger slows down, you can expect another one to rise. T-Mobile has decided to ratchet up its assault on iPhone by introducing MyTouch 3G Android phone. MyTouch does come with wifi, a decent size screen, and is a very capable Android phone. T-mobile has decided to use personalization as a big selling point for MyTouch 3G. And the name is clearly designed to allow T-Mobile to compete more effectively with iPhone and Palm Pre. MyTouch 3G may be a decent phone but it’s clearly not an iPhone killer. But it’s an interesting phone on an interesting platform — Android.

What’s more interesting about this is Google’s new push to dominate the mobile market by introducing Google Chrome OS for netbooks. This may sound unrelated to the topic at hand, but it shows Google’s determination to get a large market-share in the mobile gadget market. It’s no longer enough for Google to be involved with cell phones. And we all know Google doesn’t just enter a market to gain a small share of market. Google is clearly planning to dominate these markets, which means you can expect Android and Chrome to get much better in the next few months and years. It’d be intriguing to see Apple and Google go back and forth in the mobile gadget market.

Android is a young platform, and there are no real iPhone challengers available on it. MyTouch is another very good Android phone that will fall short of really challenging the iPhone. Not surprisingly, MyTouch has a good chance at taking market-share away from Palm Pre. T-Mobile may be better off working on a deal with Apple to bring the iPhone to its network. AT&T is hoping to keep iPhone to itself forever. But we have reached a point where having one carrier for iPhone is not enough. We have heard stories about Verizon and T-Mobile entering contract talks with Apple but so far no deal has reached. These companies and consumers would be better off if iPhone was available on more networks. As far as MyTouch is concerned, don’t expect a miracle.
