Roundup (2/9): Nexus One Sales, 3.1 Jailbreak, iPad Price Drop?

Remember how much buzz iPad created among technology fans. The device that many people expected to see doesn’t really exist. Apple customers are known for having extremely high expectations, and why shouldn’t they? Apple has been spoiling its fans for years with one innovative product after another. But the iPad seems to have lost a bit of momentum recently. Maybe it’s due to the features that people expected to see in the device and didn’t get. Or maybe it’s due to the fact that one has to wait a bit to get hands on this device. It’s no wonder Apple is considering an iPad price drop. Apple’s new tablet was thought to be fairly affordable at its current prices. But Apple is ready to do anything and everything to make the iPad a success. Apple pulled the same trick with the iPhone once (even though early adopters did get the shaft somewhat), so it wouldn’t surprise anyone if the company tried the trick again.

The iPad may undersells, but I doubt it’d do worse than Google Nexus One in its first month. Google has managed to sell only 80K units in its first month. Not the numbers anyone can brag about. Google’s launch of Nexus One has been anything but smooth. The company launched its product right after the holidays in a time when many have already picked up new smart-phones already. Besides, not many were ready to go with an unlocked version of Nexus One. Nexus One is a decent Android phone, but it’s no iPhone killer at this point.

Jailbreaking continues to be an issue for Apple. The company has tried to put a stop to the practice, but there is no stopping the crackers. The latest jailbreak software was released just a few days ago and should address the efforts made by Apple to render jailbreak phones useless. The latest jailbreak software doesn’t exploit any new holes in Apple software. But you can be sure that they are there and will be revealed in their due time. If you want to jailbreak your phone, use caution with this software. You can never be too careful.

Apple and Google both seem to be adjusting their strategies to get ready for their next round of battle. Nexus One is going to get a big push when other carriers pick it up. The iPad will keep Apple’s momentum going for a while. These two companies don’t get along, and that is sad. But as long as Google pushes Apple to reach new heights, nobody is complaining.
