Sonos’ premium music products are known for their superb quality. They are developed to allow consumers to create a fairly sophisticated music streaming system in their homes. What has kept Sonos from reaching a wider range of audience is the price of its speakers. Not everyone is willing to pay over $400 for a music player, no matter how great it is. Sonos plans to change its fortune by introducing Sonos Play:3. It is a more affordable wireless music player (at $299) that can stream iTunes content and music from services such as Spotify.
Sonos Play:3 is more compact than Play:5. It is a 3 driver speaker system with 3 digital amps, 1 tweeter, 2 mid range drivers and 1 bass radiator to bring a room filling music experience to your place. Owners have the option to control their system using their iPhone, iPad, or an Android device. Streaming content from services such as Spotify, Napster, Pandora, Rhapsody, SiriusXM, and Last.fm is supported. There is a catch here. In order to set up a completely wireless system around your house, you are going to have to pick up a Zone Bridge which sets you back another $50.
Unlike its bigger brother, Sonos Play:3 is compact enough to be wall mounted. It supports AirPlay through Apple Airport Express. Sonos does not claim to be an affordable music system. You are still going to have to spend above $400 (player + wireless bridge + iPhone/iPod dock) to build a decent system. But we can’t argue with the sound quality coming out of these speakers. This is a true gift to music lovers who don’t mind putting their money where they ear is.
