iPhone Security Still Lacking

30+ must see flexible iPhone mounts & stands

When Apple released iPhone, many experts were skeptical about its potential. Fast forward a couple of years, and Apple has one powerful device on its hands. iPhone is so popular that AT&T could suffer a big loss when Verizon iPhone is released to the market. It has the looks, the apps, and the OS. Unfortunately, it is not as secure as it needs to be. That is not just a problem for iPhone. Almost all smartphone devices are suffering from security issues. One could argue that Android phones have more issues than iPhone.

Apparently, iOS4 has a major bug in it that allows third parties to bypass iPhone’s lockscreen with a few button presses. Wired.com reported on this bug and how it could be used to give strangers access to sensitive information on an iPhone:

tap the “Emergency call” button, then enter three pound signs, hit the green call button and immediately press the lock button. That simple procedure gives a snoop full access to the Phone app on the iPhone, which contains the address book, voicemail and call history.

Those who expect iPhone to be perfect are living in an alternate universe. At the same time, this does seem like a bug that could have been prevented by Apple (see video after the break).

Apple probably needs to be more proactive with its security practices. The iPhone is not perfect, but its security has improved over time. Users may still want to think hard before storing super sensitive data on their iPhone (without any encryption).

In the meantime, Apple is plotting its next move towards completely dominating the smartphone market. There have been rumors about Apple acquiring Motorola and taking care of DROID products in the process. Sony is another company that could be purchased by Apple.

We strongly believe that one or more very strategic opportunities may come along, that we can take, that we’re in a unique position to take advantage of because of our strong cash position,

said Steve Jobs. Let’s hope Apple keeps its focus on the fundamentals as software security as it expands its operation and the iOS platform.
