at&t promised its customers that it would bring MMS capability to iPhone by the end of summer. It turned out the company was off by a few weeks (the feature will be rolled out fully on Sep 25th). A lot of at&t customers are not happy about how the whole MMS issue has worked out. Many other markets have gotten the capability earlier, so it’s been a bit disappointing to wait this long to get MMS. Fortunately, at&t listens to what its customers have to say:
we see the discussions on the Web, on blogs, on Twitter, on Facebook…We’ve been working for months to prepare the radio access controllers in our network to support this launch. That means calibrating base stations all over the country, and frankly, that’s a very time-consuming process.
So essentially, at&t is not to blame for being too slow to get the job done. To give credit to the company, some iPhone owners are already seeing the capability enabled on their phone. Apparently, at&t is rolling out MMS in phases, so if you are lucky, you may experience it sooner than a lot of other iPhone owners. The good news is if you are lucky, you get your hands on the feature two weeks early. The bad news is, at&t is still being slow with rolling out other features that we all have been waiting for (such as data tethering). It’s not to say that other carriers would have performed better in the same situation, but since Apple and at&t are working together exclusively, there is no way for us to tell.
