After iPhone 3G, what of iPod Touch?

With the iPhone coming out in a couple of weeks, one needs to wonder the direction that will be going with the iPod touch. Till now, iPod touch has been the poor man’s iPhone. If you can’t afford the service plan but want to have a cool wifi digital media player, iPod touch is there. But with iPod touch and iPhone being almost identical (except the phone and a few other features), wouldn’t it better to combine the two devices into one?

I believe that the age of us having to have an MP3 Player, a Phone, a Camera, and … in differnet devices is really coming to an end. People want to have an all-in-one solution on the go. iPod touch is not the iPhone, but there is always a possibility of product cannibalization when you are dealing with brother and sister device such as the iPod Touch and the iPhone. Why not offer iPhones to people with the option of not activating the device. In essence, instead of having an iPod touch for people to buy, why not just offer them iPhones. If they don’t activate them, then it will be just a music player with Wifi and Camera. I am sure Apple does not want to do that right now with all the precautions that its taking to make people buy the 2 year service contracts from AT&T. But the future of iPod Touch and iPhone looks awfully similar. In fact, for one of these devices, there may not be a future after all.

iPhone Release Date: June 9th or 19th?

Actually, it seem the answer is both dates. Essentially, iPhone 2.0 will be presented by Stevy Jobs on June 9th. However, AT&T and Apple store will start selling it a week or so later. Strange, but that’s what iPhone’s blog is claiming. Of course, some of us will be pulling our hairs out until the phone beccomes available in stores.

Write The Date Down: iPhone Coming on June 9th

Finally, we have a definite date to work with for the iPhone release. There have been so many rumors about when iPhone is going to be released, but now the consensus seems to be on June 9th, WWDC. The good news is that iPhone will be treated similarly to other smartphones as far as price and discounts are concerned. Apple is also promising that more iPhones will be in stock which is great news as who would want to sleep in the streets like people did last time to get their hands on the iPhone.

The Thunder: Another iPhone Killa’

Isn’t it funny how every smart phone that comes out is supposed to be the next iPhone killer. It seems as though every phone maker is out to kill, not compete but kill, the iPhone. Blackberry Thunder seems to be the next in line to join the likes of Voyager, Pearl, Blackjack II, and all other phones that were supposed to kill iPhone.

Now here is my question for all these phone makers. It is true that if you pursue a Microsoft like strategy, you can imitate greatness and become great due the resources that you have. But if you try to beat the iPhone, with an iPhone-a-like, aren’t you just kidding yourself?
