iPhone Gets Blu-Ray?

Blu-Ray may have won the format war against HD-DVD, but it is yet to achieve mass adoption among consumers. Worse yet, many experts agree that Blu-Ray is not really the future. That puts companies that are already producing Blu-Ray content in an awkward situation. Maybe that’s why Universal is launching an iPhone application to bring Blu-Ray to a whole new platform that is iPhone. Apparently, the app will allow its owner to content some Blu-Ray content from iPhone. Pretty exciting, right?

If you have owned a Blu-Ray disk, you are probably familiar with all the extra content that you get on it. Universal’s Blu-Ray app for iPhone will essentially allow you to download a bit of those content to your iPhone and lets you review and control things on your phone. BD Live is an interesting technology, and it is very interesting to see how this app fares in the weeks to come.

I am not a big fan of Blu-Ray, but I’d be willing to give new technologies and apps a try before counting them out. I am just not sure where Universal is going with this app. The Blu-Ray technology is not the future, so Universal is apparently trying to focus on short-term gains by introducing an app that on the paper is not that useful. Now I’d be the first to admit that I want to see Blu-Ray technology on Macbooks but even that doesn’t make me excited about this app. The app is a admirable effort by Universal to boost sales. I am just no sure it’s the right move.
