iPhone: Should you buy or wait for iPhone 2.0?

A co-worker of mine asked me a very good question this week about his iPhone dilemma. He explained me that he was going to get a gift for his anniversary from his girlfriend and was wondering if it’s worth waiting till June to get iPhone 2.0. The answer is really simple. iPhone 2.0 will probably be out early July, so if you are hoping for a June turnaround, you are probably out of luck.

Having said that, you should not get an iPhone if:

  • You don’t use your cell phone a lot. If you have never had a cell phone in your life, you may want to avoid iPhone for now. But iPhone is a premium cell phone, so it’s not for everyone.
  • You are not an application developer. The general rule of thump is that if you are an app developer for the iPhone, you should own one too. It’s for the best, believe me!
  • You can wait till August to get iPhone 2.0. Unless you are on fire and you think you can put out that fire with the iPhone, you should wait at least a couple of month to get the better, improved version of the iPhone. Obviouly if you have enough money to own both, then that’s your call. But you can easily invest your money in something else like an HD-radio or Sirius Satellite Radio (or you can get a PLEO like me).

So yes. You should definitely own an iPhone if you have the need for a smart phone. But don’t buy an iPhone if you haven’t already. You have resisted it so far, so why not wait another month or two to get the new improved iPhone. So who else is getting an iPhone for their anniversary, birthday, or …?
